Within a span of almost fifty years, Singapore has grown from a population of 1.6 million to an overwhelming number of 4.9 million, today. Singapore is a small country, and her people are the most important and valuable resource. She needs people, and we cannot deny or manipulate that fact.
Technology keeps advancing, and the once-upon-a-time village native nation has turned to a country of fine commercial buildings. We are proud of being the smallest country in the world with a growing population, a capable and successful democratic Government, one of the safest countries to live in the world due to the uptight security and offer one of the best education systems in the world.
But, do we still have our roots embedded in this nation?
Roots. What are they, really? Usually when we see trees, we would set our eyes on the crown. This is because the crown is staunch to the growth of the tree. Yet ironically, we forget about looking at the roots. It is human nature to capture the immediate and beautiful things in our irises. Thus, we would easily forget the cause of such beautiful things. The roots which are the basic ground for trees to grow and nurture as a living organism, is commonly and conveniently neglected.
Have you been served by Chinese Nationals who only speak Chinese? To order something as simple as a cup of tea or a plate of skinless boneless chicken rice can cause a wreck is some of our brains. There has been an increasing number of Chinese Nationals in our country, and is a common face especially in our local coffee shops.
Many local people have the difficulty of trying to converse with the Chinese Nationals in Chinese. Even though most of the local people are Chinese, there is still a reasonable amount percentage of the population which are of different races. Singapore is a nation on her own and her people should be treated in the right way.
We practise multi-rationality. Thus, our official language is the English language – and we should be using the English language as a common platform between the different races and the different immigrants to avoid misunderstanding and unnecessary confusion. It is a serious problem we’re facing in Singapore, especially when many of the local residents are slowly migrating or leaving the country for various reasons.
Who is going to protect our motherland and continue the rich country of multi-rationality?
Many of our own people migrate, leave Singapore for better prospects. They claim that the green pastures out of Singapore are greener. Some migrate or leave, to pursue an overseas education, commonly in Australia and New Zealand. Some migrate or leave, for the sake of a better job. Some migrate to other countries such as the United States, Australia and even New Zealand.
There are many reasons as to why people would leave Singapore. The worrying affair is to know that we’re turning to a population of multi-nationalism. We’ve immigrants from China, India, the Philippines, Malaysians and the list goes on.
Throughout there are many debatable issues about whether the increase population of immigrants would become to the pride or plight of our nation. They are our pride because they are able to represent Singapore in international competitions and do the country honour when they win. However, these immigrants become a plight to our nation when they are also capable enough to achieve what our local people can. Hence, there is an increase of fear in our local people that our jobs, universities places would be taken by these immigrants.
A nation is like a tree. Even if the tree crown is beautiful and is a home to many organisms living together, it is very important to remember the roots. The tree crown represents the different immigrants and Singaporeans living together and making Singapore a progressive society and nation. However, we must not lose our ancestral roots which are us – Singaporeans.
Of course, we always welcome immigrants to our little red dot country. On the same hand, it is always good to keep our roots together as – One People, One Nation, and One Singapore. |
