What is the SAT?

The SAT I Reasoning Test is a three-hour, primarily 
multiple-choice test that measures verbal and 
mathematical reasoning abilities.
Verbal sections include Sentence Completion, 
Analogy and Critical Reading questions 
while Math sections are composed of Arithmetic, 
Algebra, Geometry questions.

What is the SAT required for? 
SAT I is used as an admission criterion for admission to US universities 
and is now also a mandatory component used 
for university admission in Singapore. 
In addition to SAT I, some US universities also 
require SAT II.

When should I take the SAT?
The best SAT score in the five years preceding the
 application to university will be used. Students 
should take the SAT early enough such that 
they have ample opportunity to take the test 
a second or even third time to have 
the chance to improve their scores. 
49% of students have taken the SAT at least twice.
 Research has shown that test scores tend to improve
 when test takers take the SAT more than once.

How is the SAT scored?
You are given a point for every right answer. 
A fraction of multiple-choice questions answered wrongly
 will be subtracted from this total that is then rounded.
 This forms your raw score that is converted to 
a separate scaled score of between 200 and 800 
for Verbal and Math. The combined score ranges 
between 400 to 1600.

What is a “good” SAT score? 
3 million tests were taken worldwide this year; 
about 25,000 of which were taken in Singapore. 
The average score for all students is 506 and 514 
for Verbal and Math, respectively.
In general, an overall score of 1200 is considered decent.
 However, different schools have different requirements.
 Thus you should check with the schools to 
which you are applying in order to find out 
the respective minimum required scores 
as well as the average scores of successful applicants.

Would a preparatory course help my SAT score? 
Of course! The SAT stands for Scholastic Assessment Test;
 it assesses how well you take this particular test. 
It does not measure inherent aptitude or IQ. 
We can guide you through the academic concepts

When will the new SAT be used?
The College Board in the US plans to revamp the SAT 
and use a new test format in March 2005. 
The changes that are being made include changing
 the SAT Verbal Exam to the SAT Critical Reading Exam. 
Short reading sections will be added to existing long reading sections. 
A new section called the SAT Writing Exam 
will be added containing multiple-choice grammar questions
 as well a written essay. The new SAT Math will include more 
complex concepts from algebra. It will be the 10th change 
to the SAT in its 76th year history.
However until then, the SAT will remain the same. Moreover, 
SAT scores are valid for a total of 5 years. 
This means that if you take the SAT right before the format is changed,
 your scores would still be valid after the test structure is revamped. 


What is SAT II? The SAT II Subject Tests 
are primarily multiple-choice tests that measure knowledge of 
particular subjects and ability to apply that knowledge. 
Subjects include Writing, Literature, Math IC, Math IIC, Physics, 
Chemistry, Biology, World History etc. Each Subject Test is one hour long. 
SAT II is required for admission to some (but not all) US universities. 
You should check with the specific universities to which 
you are applying in order to find out if SAT II is needed.
If so, you will need to take 3 Subject Tests, one of 
which must be SAT II: Writing.
Even if it is not a compulsory admission requirement, 
SAT II can help you demonstrate your achievements. 
Many US universities that do not require 
Subject Tests will still look at your Subject Test scores to
 learn more about your academic background.
You are not able to take both SAT I and SAT II tests on 
the same date. As such you need to plan in advance to
 take both tests in time to meet university application deadlines.
