The furthest distance in the world
Is not between life and death
But when I stand in front of you
Yet you don"t know that I love you

Those of us who grew up with English as our first language have been exposed to idioms and idiomatic expressions for most of our lives. They may have confused us a little when we were children, but explanation and constant exposure not only increased our understanding of them, but likely drew them into our own vernacular. If you’re in the process of learning the English language, you may come across some of these and not be entirely sure what they mean. Here’s a list of 20 that you’re likely to come across fairly often:

  1. A Chip on Your Shoulder

No, this doesn’t mean that you’ve dropped part of your snack. To have a chip on one’s shoulder implies that the person is carrying around some grudge or bad feelings about something that happened in the past… like having walked through the wreckage of a building, and ended up with a chip of that building stuck to them for years afterward。 “To have a chip on one's shoulder”

  2. Bite Off More Than You Can Chew

Like taking a HUGE bite of a sandwich that will fill your mouth up so much that you can’t move your jaw, this idiom implies that you’ve taken on more than you can handle successfully. An example would be agreeing to build ten websites in a week when normally you can only handle five。

  3. You Can’t Take It With You

You can’t take anything with you when you die, so don’t bother hoarding your stuff or not using it except for “special occasions”. Live now, because all your stuff is going to be around long after you’re gone。

  4. Everything But the Kitchen Sink

This implies that nearly everything has been packed/taken/removed. For instance, if someone said: “The thieves stole everything but the kitchen sink!” it meant that they took everything they could carry; it’s damned hard to remove a sink and carry it around。

例如,如果有人说:“The thieves stole everything but the kitchen sink!”

  5. “Over My Dead Body”

When the only way you’ll allow something to happen is if you’re no longer alive to stop it。

  6. Tie the Knot

To get married. This is left over from the old tradition of handfasting, wherein the hands of the bride and groom would be tied together with a length of ribbon to symbolize that their lives were fastened together permanently。

  7. Don’t Judge a Book By Its Cover

Things aren’t always what they appear to be at first glance, so it’s a good idea to give something a chance, even if its outward appearance isn’t immediately attractive。

*The exception to this might be actual books that have hideous covers: those tend to be terrible all around, and in cases such as these, it’s best to contact the author or publisher and recommend a good graphic designer。

  8. When Pigs Fly

This means “never”. Pigs aren’t about to sprout wings and take flight anytime soon, so if someone says to their kid that they can get a forehead tattoo when pigs fly, it’s not gonna happen。

  9. A Leopard Can’t Change His Spots

Basically: you are who you are. Just like a leopard can’t concentrate really hard and change the pattern on its skin, people can’t change who they really are at heart。

  10. Wear Your Heart on Your Sleeve

To freely show and express all of your emotions, as though your heart were on the outside of your body。

  11. Bite Your Tongue!

Stick your tongue between your teeth (gently), and then try to speak. You can’t say a word, can you? To bite one’s tongue means to stay quiet: literally to hold the tongue still so it can’t make a sound. This goes along with:

  12. Put a Sock In It

The idea behind this is that if you stuffed a sock in your mouth, you’d be quiet… so if you tell someone to “put a sock in it”, you’re telling them to shut up。

。所以如果你对别人说“put a sock in it”,你是告诉他们不要说话了。

  13. Let Sleeping Dogs Lie

If a couple of dogs had been fighting and are now sleeping peacefully, it’s best to just leave them alone. The idea behind this one is to avoid bringing up old arguments so they’ll just be argued about again。

  14. Foam at the Mouth

To hiss and snarl in anger like a rabid dog (whose mouth would be foamy as he jumps around like crazy and tries to bite people)。

  15. A Slap on the Wrist

A very, very mild punishment. To be slapped on the wrist doesn’t hurt much, and isn’t a deterrent from misbehaving again。

  16. You Are What You Eat

This is the idea that everything you eat influences your health and well-being. If you eat nothing but junk food, you’ll end up unhealthy and malnourished, so be sure to eat a well-balanced diet。

  17. “It’s a Piece of Cake!”

…meaning that it’s incredibly easy. No-one has a difficult time eating a piece of cake, do they?

  18. It Takes Two to Tango

A person can’t dance the tango alone, nor can they fight by themselves either. If an argument has occurred, there were two people involved, so two were responsible。

  19. Head Over Heels

To be incredibly excited and joyful, particularly with regard to being in love. Imagine someone so happy that they do cartwheels down the street: like that。

  20. An Arm and a Leg

When something is so ridiculously expensive that you might have to sell your own body parts in order to afford it, it’s said to cost “an arm and a leg”。

这就是说成本是“an arm and a leg"。

  4.译作feed on,live on等短语动词。Cattle feed chiefly on grass。

A:Can I borrow some money, please?

B:No!

He has no wife, no children andis living alone.

I am afraid there is not any food left.

No students got an A grade in theirphysics exams this year.

No smoking

No entry

A: Can I go home now? I'm really not feeling well.

Not+形容词 (adj)

This film is not suitable forunder 14s.

Not+名词 (noun)

The lady over there is not Sally.

Not+介词 (prep)

I was not in the office when the big boss came to visit.

Not+副词 (adv)

The essay was not well written.

Not to 的用法

We were told not to enter the building outside working hours.

1、“Can I get a…”

Please can I have/ I’d like to order the…

  2、“least worst option”

The lesser of two evils/the better of the two

eg:I think going with him is the better of two evils/is the better of the two options。

  3、”two-time” and “three-time”

  Eg:a double occurrence (not a two-time occurrence)

  4、24/7

  英式表达:All the time/constantly。

Eg:He plays video game the whole time/he constantly plays video games. (不要:he plays video games 24/7!)

  5、“deplane”

英国人吐槽:我不能忍受的就是“deplane”这个词,意思就是下飞机,用法是这样的:“You will be able to deplane momentarily(您很快就能下飞机了)”。

正确的词: disembark, get off the plane。

  6、“wait on”

Wait on = wait for. Wait for train, not wait on a train。

  7、“It is what it is”

英国人吐槽:“It is what it is。

That’s just what’s happened. That’s just how it’s turned out。

Eg:We tried everything to make the situation easier, but that’s just how it’s turned out。

  8、“fanny pack”

But fanny packs/bum bags aren’t really around anymore, they’re not considered to be cool!

  9、 “Touch base”

  英式表达: Touch Base = 意思不大清楚,get in touch/get in contact/make contact with s.o 都更好点。

  10、“physicality”

  英国人吐槽:“Physicality(物质性)”真的是一个词吗?

Use “physical”state instead!

Eg:You will be able to disembark the plane shortly/ you’ll be able to get off the plane shortly。

  11、 “Transportation”

  英国人吐槽:Transportation(交通工具)是怎么回事?

  12、“leverage”

  13、“turn”

  英式表达:He’s turning 23已经变成了最常用的说法,但也可以说:it’s his 23rd birthday/he’ll be 23。

  14、“shopping cart”

  15、“gotten”

  英国人吐槽:“Gotten(get的过去分词,美式用法)”到底是个什么词?

He’s gotten a bit ill? 应该是He’s fallen ill! The weather has gotten better? 应该是The weather turned out nice!

  16、“I’m good”

  英国人吐槽:用“I’m good(我很好)”替代“I’m well”,刚刚开始接受了。

Here are five sure-fire, incredibly easy actions that will immediately improve your workplace experience:

1. Take a "quiet minute" each morning.

Within your morning routine, carve out a minute--60 seconds--to be silent, by yourself. Don't think about work. Read a poem or say a prayer. Or just rest your brain. You'll be amazed at how much extra energy it will create for the rest of your day.

2. Smile more frequently.

Smiling accomplishes two things. First, it tells your brain to be more happy. (Try being depressed with a huge grin stuck on your face.) Second, when you smile it tends to make other people smile, too. It's contagious, in a good way.

3. Give yourself more credit.

Take a second to give yourself a mental and emotional pat on the back every time you complete a project, even if it's only a small part of a larger effort. This creates a sense of accomplishment that keeps you from feeling overwhelmed.

4. Celebrate when you learn something.

If you're alive, you can't help learning something new every day. The trick here is to recognize when you've learned something new and potentially important. That's a victory and worth a quiet, inner "hooray!"

5. Enjoy human nature.

Let's face it: People do really strange things. You have a choice when confronted with these foibles: 1) Be irritated; or 2) Be amused. Being irritated makes you miserable but being amused helps you find creative ways to work around the limitations of others.

6. Say thanks to those who do thankless tasks.

You probably already know that you should thank co-workers and customers on a regular basis. But what about the janitors, the facilities people, the call center staff? They've got really tough jobs and seldom hear that their contributions are valued.

A couple that can laugh together will have a better chance of weathering the hard times. Laughter makes us all happier too. When you can laugh easily with your spouse life just seems better. Good things happen in your body when you laugh as well!

First off, it is essential that you have a date night with your significant other every week. Your relationship with this person needs to be handled with care and you both owe each other that time to nurture it。

Make it a rule that during that time you avoid talking about kids and work. This night is about the two of you and your relationship. You may not feel you have one outside of those two topics but you do. You got together for a reason and date night helps you remember and reinforce that reason。

Not sure what to talk about outside of work and kids? Start by reminiscing about the early days and years. Then as you continue to have date nights and bring more fun into your romance you will have more positive shared experiences between the two of you to draw on for conversation。

Try to avoid conflict discussions as well. Use this time to nurture your relationship, not cause more tension. Address those topics at a separate time, but keep date night sacred。
